Philodendron Burle Marx ‘Tiger Mint Rx’
A NurseryRx Original Cultivar
🌿 Collector’s Note
Submitted to the International Aroid Society Registry in 2024. This is a genetically stable mutation proven through multiple generations.
📖 The Story
In July 2021, we purchased what appeared to be a standard variegated Burle Marx. By October, something unusual began to emerge. By November, we knew we had something special — a spontaneous mutation producing variegation unlike anything we’d seen before.
After careful isolation, propagation testing across multiple media (soil, sphagnum, and hydroponics), and observation through multiple generations and growers, we’re proud to introduce ‘Tiger Mint Rx’ — a stable, distinctive cultivar that brings something truly unique to the Burle Marx family.
🐯🌱 The Name
- Tiger refers to the asymmetrical striated markings that ripple across the foliage like tiger stripes, sometimes appearing as speckles and spots.
- Mint describes the refreshing minty-green tone of the variegation — a color rarely seen in aroids.
- Rx represents our greenhouse, NurseryRx, where this beauty first revealed itself.
✨ What Makes It Special
This isn't your typical variegated Burle Marx. 'Tiger Mint' displays an extraordinary minty-green on darker green variegation that can appear alongside the classic creamy-white variegation, creating a layered, multi-tonal effect. The variegation expresses in two distinct patterns - sometimes as bold asymmetrical striations (the "tiger"), other times as speckled, mojito-like mottling - and both can appear on the same plant. The variegation intensifies as leaves mature, creating an ever-evolving display. What's particularly fascinating is its responsive nature: markings may fade under stress (low light, underwatering), but reliably return when conditions improve - like a mood ring for your plant care skills.
🌱 Growth Habit
Hemiepiphytic with a compact, bushy vine habit. Develops multiple growth points for a full, shrub-like appearance while maintaining classic Philodendron climbing characteristics.
🍃 Leaf Characteristics
Classic Burle Marx leaf shape - cordate to ovate with rounded tips, though occasional variations produce more pointed leaves. Immature leaves on these variants tend to be elongated, rounding out beautifully as they mature. The real show is in the variegation: asymmetrical mint-green striations dancing across the leaf surface, sometimes transitioning to speckled patterns that resemble a perfectly muddled mojito.💚 Why You’ll Love It
Every leaf tells a story. The variegation pattern is never quite the same twice, giving you an ever-changing display that rewards attentive care. It's stable enough to be reliable, variable enough to stay interesting, and distinctive enough that your plant friends will absolutely ask "wait, what IS that?" Plus, knowing you're growing a newly registered cultivar? That's just cool.🪴 Care Requirements
- Light: Bright indirect light brings out the best variegation
- Water: Allow top inch of soil to dry between waterings; consistent moisture encourages vibrant markings
- Humidity: Moderate to high (50–70%+)
- Soil: Well-draining aroid mix
- Temperature: 65–80°F (18–27°C)
Note: Proven stable across various growing media — soil, sphagnum/perlite, and hydroponic setups.
